Last Friday the Brady Bulldogs proved they wouldn’t be a pushover team as the Bulldogs were last year with the 44-13 loss to the Broncos in Bulldog Stadium.

This year the Broncos used a ball control offense to take time off the clock and keep the quick-strike Bulldog offense off the field. Most importantly, Sonora improved to 2-0 in District 2-3A play when the final horn sounded and the scoreboard read 28-22.

Sonora received the opening kickoff at their 47 yard line. The first drive lasted 18 plays featuring hard running by Jaime Buitron, Hunter O’Banon, and Sean Mungia. The drive ended when the Bulldogs stopped the Broncos on the four yard line.

The teams traded drives after the scoreless first quarter. With two and a half minutes expired in the second quarter, Buitron punted and the ball rolled dead inside the five. Bulldog quarterback Hayden Baronet ran to the right for a pass. Fernando Gonzalez, timing his leap perfectly, intercepted the ball and took it for the 14 yard Pick Six, his second of the season.

The next Bulldog drive ended when J.D. Ibarra fumbled on their fourth play of the drive and Edgar De Luna recovered for the Broncos. After the Sonora drive ended with a sack/strip fumble, Brady responded with a 21 yard touchdown run by Zeke Jones. Angel Lopez split the uprights making the score Sonora 8-7 at 3:34 in the second quarter.

Buitron ended the first half scoring with a nine yard touchdown run. The score at the end of first half was Sonora 14-7 over Brady.

The Bulldog returner fumbled the Sonora kickoff. Gage Owen recovered for the Broncos. Sonora capitalized on the turnover and Buitron threw a pass to Gonzalez who wove his way through Bulldog defenders for a 21 yard touchdown. “Fernando has been great all year,” Coach Blake Weston said. “He is a very explosive player and I’m glad he is playing this year because of his game-changing speed.” After the Buitron run for the two point conversion the score was 22-7 at 9:31 left in the third quarter.

Brady came right back with a four play drive that ended with a 15 yard touchdown run by Jones. After the good kick, the score was 22-14 less than two minutes after the Sonora TD.

After two un-noteworthy drives, it was the Broncos time to score. This drive covered 69 yards, over five minutes was taken off the clock and highlighted the shifty Mungia who gained most of the drive’s yardage. He got the touchdown on a one yard run with 9:10 left in the game. “We have three very good backs. Two weeks in a row, we’ve seen Sean take over the second half,” Weston said of the senior. The PAT pass was unsuccessful and Sonora had a 28-14 cushion.

Brady helped themselves with a kickoff return to the Bronco 47 yard line. The Bulldogs used only 44 seconds to tighten the game. Ibarra scored on a 29 yard TD run. The Bulldogs tacked on a successful two point pass play. The score was 28-22 with 8:26 left to play.

The Broncos used their trio of backs plus a jet sweep by Jackson Carroll to use up six plus minutes of game time. Brady took over on downs at the Brady six yard line. The Bulldogs ran ten plays before Carroll intercepted a desperation fourth down pass to seal the Sonora victory.

On Friday night, the Broncos 4-3 overall, 2-0 in district travel to Bangs(1-5,1-1).

Last Thursday night the 7th grade Colts lost 20-6 and the 8th grade Colts got their first victory with a 22-6 score. Justin Gonzalez score twice and David Luna had one TD.

In Brady, the Bronco JV won 14-0 and are now 6-1. The JV Broncos will host Bangs on October 21, 2021 with a 5:00 p.m. kick off time.
