Lydia Mejia Galindo, beloved mother and grandmother, cousin and friend, was called home by our Lord on July 13, 2023. She passed away peacefully at home with family gathered around her.
Born September 6, 1929, in Sonora, Texas to Juanita Perez and Santiago Mejia, Lydia grew up in the home of her grandparents Maria Sanchez and Salome Perez, Sr. shortly after her father passed. She graduated from the L.W. Elliott School as class valedictorian in 1948. Lydia met her husband Pedro Galindo, Jr. at a youth volleyball game at the St. Ann Catholic Church grounds. They married on December 27, 1951, and had four children.
Lydia was devoted to her Catholic faith and her church community, where she served as CCD teacher, choir director along with her husband Pedro, eucharistic minister, lector, led a prayer group with her husband, and ministered to shut-ins. She was a cursillista and a member of the Guadalupanas. Lydia founded and led a prayer group, Fidelis, which met monthly to celebrate the word of God through prayer and song and fellowship. Lydia had a giving heart and was always doing good deeds for others, collecting money donations for friends and family in need, sending plates of food to friends and neighbors who found themselves sick or alone on holidays, remembered birthdays and wrote beautiful cards, and called friends daily to check on them.
Throughout the years, she served as PTA officer, room mother, 4-H leader, elementary school volunteer, and elections clerk. Lydia was a proud Democrat.
Well known in the community, she answered to: Mom, Granny, Aunt Lydia, Cousin Lee, and Madrina/Comadre.
Lydia is survived by her children: Jimmy Galindo (Gracie Vazquez), Mary Sue Galindo (Manuel Juarez), and Nora Lee Galindo and grandchildren: George Reyes, Jr., Juanita Andrea Juarez, Marcella Inez Juarez, and Manuel Enrique Juarez, Jr.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Pedro Galindo, Jr., her eldest daughter Delma Letticia Galindo, and parents Juanita Perez Mejia and Santiago Mejia.
Serving as pallbearers: George Reyes, Jr. (grandson); Manuel Enrique Juarez, Jr. (grandson); Sam David Hernandez, (nephew); Pete Perez (second cousin); Samuel Galindo, Jr. (nephew); and Jaime Galindo (nephew).
