The Sutton County Commissioners convened on Monday, June 26, 2023, in a meeting that featured the swearing-in of a new deputy and discussions regarding county expenses and office relocations.

The boys' golf team from Sonora demonstrated their athletic prowess in the Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL) 2A State Championship. Held on May 22-23 at the historic Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin, this event brought together top golfers from across the state.

4-H members from Sutton County 4-H participated at Texas 4-H Roundup in College Station, Texas, June 5-8th.

On Thursday, June 8, 2023 the Sutton County Library kicked off their summer events with Doug Baum and his Texas Camel Corps. Kids and adults gathered at the county park to hear the history of the camel. The following on camels was written by Meddie Stewart.

In Sonora, the local community, still basking in the joy of recent graduations and much-needed rain, observed Memorial Day with a poignant ceremony held at Liberty Park by the Sonora Downtown Lions Club. Memorial Day is observed as a moment to honor the sacrifice of fallen U.S. military personnel and acknowledge the families they left behind.

On the morning of Thursday, May 25, 2023, Sonora Elementary School was a hub of activity as 33 preschoolers, 26 graduates and seven returning royalty kings and queens graced the stage.

On Friday, May 26th, Bronco Stadium was filled with family and friends as the class of 2023 prepared to close their high school journey.

Bronco and Lady Bronco track finalist traveled to Canyon last week in hopes of staying in the race to State. Unfortunately the Lady Bronco season comes to an end while the boys 4x400 team will compete at the next level. The following was submitted by Coaches Tiffany Weston and Eddie Favila.

The dynamic duo place third at State Tennis Tournament.

Lady Bronco Golf Team is State bound. The team of Annika Galindo, Madison Galindo, Rylie Thorp, Koda Davis, and Jolene Pasillas traveled to Canyon on April 17th and 18th to compete in the Texas 2A Region 1 Golf Tournament.

You know it when you see it. That determined look, that high-five jump or pat on the back, that enormous smile. It is the power of sports and the accomplishment of a job well done. On Tuesday, April 4th, Sonora ISD hosted the “Best of the West” Special Olympics Track and Field Meet. It was a day filled with high-five’s, pats on the back, countless smiles, and even a few tears.

Bryn and Mary Humphrey would like to take this opportunity to thank a very dedicated group of safety-conscious folks who offered donations to help defray the cost of medical supply bags, emergency bailout bags and breaching tool kits for our local law enforcement agencies.

Sonora boys competed in the State Powerlifting meet in Abilene Saturday, March 25th.

History came alive at the Sutton County Public Library as the daughters and granddaughter of Edith May Babcock came from all over the United States on Friday, February 24th, 2023 to share stories, pictures, and read aloud a children’s book written about their mothers’ life. This was shared with the students of Sonora Elementary and Intermediate school.

On Saturday, February 18th, twelve members of the Mighty Bronco Band competed at the UIL Solo & Ensemble contest at Odessa College. Soloist that memorized their solo or ensembles that received a Superior Rating from their judge, they advance to the state competition set to be held in Austin on Memorial Day.

Sonora’s Edgar DeLuna was named this week to the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association’s 2A All-State football team.
